Look at my beautiful new icon by [livejournal.com profile] meeksp!  She captured the bright enamels, the different metal colors, and even the casual integration with daily life shown in my Torn World-style readings by Rai-Kunabei.  Thank you, Meeks!

(For those who don't know, she periodically draws an icon as a random "door prize" for one of the people who comment on her drawings.  You should go check out her art.)

I've done this before. If you hang out here, you probably know what to do. If not, and you want more information that the notes below, go here for a bit of information.  (I'm carving a bit of time out of my lunch hour to make this post, so please pardon me if I seem rushed!)

EDIT: THIS DRAW IS CLOSED. However, if you missed it, and really want a card or three, I'll add you to the queue for $5/card.

Please leave a question or comment, and a tip if you can.  Anyone can request a free card.  As a thank-you for people who tip $5 or more, I'll do a two-card reading, and $10 or more, a three-card reading.  You can suggest a divination method/deck if you have a preference, out of the ones that I use.

I will probably do most of the readings over the weekend, however, I wanted to get this posted so anyone who particularly wants a reading drawn on the Equinox has that opportunity.  Please let me know if a reading done during the equinox would be particularly meaningful to you.  Otherwise, patrons will be given priority on readings.  Please note:  I do readings to the best of my ability to provide inspiration, insight, and entertainment.  Please go see a mundane professional if you need one.

Again, sorry for the brevity of the introductory post!  Gotta run!

Oh, dear, I almost forgot to put the hat out!

Horrah! I would love a reading from Rai-Kunabei on the topic of an art project I'm embarking on. :)

You climb up through a beautiful autumn day to get to Kuleilyi. The leaves are mostly on the trees, still, brilliant golds, oranges, and reds, with an occasional purple or brown. As they let go of their branches, one by one, they drift down slowly, turning in the wind, sometimes seeming to flutter. They remind you of the butterflies when you walked this path last spring.

When you get to the tiny town, you find that Rai-Kunabei is not there. The teenage boy who you're talking to explains that she has climbed up into the mountains to check out something one of the goat-kids found. "No, not a baby goat, one of the young goat-herders. Listen carefully--the word is slightly different, though that's what most lowlanders hear. Would you like to go look? Someone could be found to take you to her..." the houng man trails off, suddenly sounding uncertain, "You do know how to spin ball, whistles, don't you?"

You shake your head. Even if you did know, you don't want to go higher than this nice, safe little town where every tall promontory has bells on the roofs.

He leads you to the Mayor, an old woman who is sitting under a tree, mending clothes. She tells you a story about Dragon and Rock Tender, which you follow by telling the story

Skycat and Woodpecker Make a Bet
. The two of you gather a small audience, but only young children. The rest are either practicing their whistle-twirling or already up the mountain. The mayor is about to start another story, the tale of Phoenix and the Autumn Leaves, when there is a sound of many people talking. Rai-Kunabei walks up, surrounded by several dozen young people--young adults and older children. With her is a heavily muscled older man, who is grinning broadly.

"So, what did you find?" The mayor asked quietly, her hands still busy with her needle and thread, but people settled down, most of them sitting on logs or benches or the ground.

Rai-Kunabei said solemnly. "Wraiths did indeed strike the mountainside, up where the old apple tree used to stand."

"And there's a rich new vein of ore exposed up there!" The man opened his huge hands to show hunks of rock. "Definitely iron, and maybe other metals too! We'll have to build a mine entrance and some bell towers, but we can stop trying to dig the Riboyorl mine deeper, now. We will have a new nine, the Karliyorl."

People pushed forward a mid-size child of indeterminate gender, and the big man pressed a hunk of metal into the child's hand. "Thank you, Karli, for finding the new mine!"

Then there was an impromptu party, people bringing out food and musical instruments, and dancing, and the blushing child assuring people, "I'm glad I didn't encounter the wraith that did it! I'd rather be a smith than a Rai!"

Marriage

From: [identity profile] wyld-dandelyon.livejournal.com
It's a little while--not until after the smith who is making Rai-Kunabei's new disks has agreed to try Karli as an apprentice--that Rai-Kubabei takes you aside. "Did you come for a reading?"

You nod, and smile.

"For your--" She waves toward your belly.

You shake your head. "No, not this time. This time I'd like some insight regtarding for an art project I've started."

She leads you to her tree and lifts the leather bag down out of the hollow where a branch meets the trunk. "I know I carry these almost everywhere, but not into the mountains when someone saw signs of a wraith. These are heavy, and I wouldn't want them to get all warped and scorched."

"Do they ward off wraiths too?"

"I doubt it--these are silent, to the ear, at least, no matter how loudly they sometimes speak to my mind. But," she reached into a pocket and pulled out a rock--no a piece of ore. "Look--you can see where the metal in the rock is, and it's all crackled and iridescent like my ball-whistle."

You looked, and nodded, then she placed it back in her pocket. "Let's see what the disks have to say about your artwork." She reached into the leather bag and pulled out a disk. You can see that it glows a rich gold in the late afternoon sun. She turns it over and hands it to you to look at. Depicted in the enamels, in amazing detail, are a man and woman, all dressed up and with a string of bells suitable for a rooftop wrapped around their shoulders.

"Marriage," Rai-Kunabei smiled. "The embodiment of human-made connection. This disk invites you to think about how things are connected harmoniously and fruitfully within the art--and also about how you will use this art to connect with your audience.

You thank her, and the two of you head back to the party. As you head down the mountain later, you think not only about the ambitious art project, but about Kuleilyi culture, and how much fear of the wraiths has impacted their culture. Binding a couple together with a string of bells designed to protect a house from wraiths seems so in-character for them. And then, this new thing--waiths bringing not just fear and death, but the prosperity of a new mine. The Empire scientists laugh at the idea of wraiths, calling it superstition. But how could mere superstition warp and scorch metal, mush less open a rift in a mountainside deep enough to expose a new vein of ore?

Do you think the details about exposing a vein, and starting a new mine, are good? If so, we could use the parts of this that aren't part of the reading as the inspiration for a story.

I love the idea of exposing a vein - it should probably be something non-metallic, though, like coal, rather than iron ore. That will be as (if not more!) valuable to them, actually. Gems of some kind would be another alternative.

The basis of your question is magic--the inherent magic in the world and the magic gifted to you by friends. The tools you need to use that magic are represented by the turtle and the fish on the token (which also has a star hiding on it, and which proclaims NO CASH VALUE). The turtle reminds you that slow and steady works, even if it doesn't seem glamorous. The fish-and-token say that expressing your emotions is more important to achieving your goals than anything you could acquire with money.

There's a flow to what you do, though it isn't a straight line. You take a bit of friendship here, and some ancient history there, keen observation of nature, things commonplace, and things fantastic, and create a dream. Look there, at the top, that's a thimble, a tool to help you create without pricking your fingers. Look closer--that's a unicorn on the thimble. Pick it up--it's a mother unicorn with her baby--a paradox, the symbol of purity and virginity and also the symbol of the new life that comes from passion. You can't hope to do well without feeling the point of the unicorn's horn where it touches your heart. But don't be afraid, you can take all these things and more, and twist them together and create something new.

You find Rai Kunabei sitting on a boulder, staring at what had been her great grandmother's tiny house. She is young; you've arrived shortly after she gained the title and went from herding goats to being a priestess of her people.

"The roof is still sound." She sounds skeptical. "Do you think I really need a house all to myself?"

"You're asking me?"

She turns and looks at you, and blushes. "I'm sorry. I thought Grandpa was right behind me. Have you--did you come for a reading?"

"I would love one."

She jumped to her feet and picked up the bag. "Well, we could go inside, I guess. It's awfully rocky here, and there's just the one boulder." She leads you to the door, where she unties a knot and opens it, to the sound of bells ringing. "Grandpa tied it shut after Rai-Konalei died, to keep animals out.

Inside, there's a little room with a round table and chairs. Kunabei goes straight to one of the smaller side chairs and then stops, goes to the far side of the table and sits in the tall, carved chair there. "I guess this is my chair, now."

"You look good in it."

She gives you a skeptical look, but sets the leather bag on the sturdy table. Once you also sit down, she reaches inside and pulls out a disk. It's one of the iron disks, one side covered in a deep, luminescent black enamel. The color is rich, making you think of purple and midnight blue. "For you, Void, the challenging aspect of sky. This is the dark of night, when all things remain possible the next day. But if you worry about it too much, you won't sleep, and you won't get the rest you need to meet whatever challenges await you. So the first challenge is to refuse to let the scary mystery of it keep you from doing what you must to be ready."

Suddenly, she laughed. "I think there's a message here for me too!
Being Rai is a big responsibility, just as scary as the darkness of a night sky with no stars or moons to light the way. But brooding about it isn't helping." She stood and bowed. "Thank you for the insight."

Meeks' crowd funded project is illustrating scenes from stories. You could request a sketch for one of your stories, if you like. I'd go look for the prompts post for you, but I spent most of the evening outside trying to tempt our young inside cat who got outside to stop hiding under the porch so we could get her back inside, and it's late.

Would you like a reading, while you're here?

for you, a collection of creatures from my box of not-runes. They remind me of a story circle here, or perhaps a council meeting of some sort, but they're not paying very good attention. Hear-No-Evil isn't hearing evil, true--but he's not hearing much of anything else. The fish is hiding in the back so you can't even see his eyes. The dragon is snoozing and it's hard to tell about the lizard. The owl remembers that if you don't say anything you can't sound stupid. And the old man is just standing there. They need a nice bonfire in the middle, and maybe some mead or hot tea, and marshmallows to roast over the fire. And chocolate--they definitely need chocolate! Because if you could get the party going properly, oh, the stories they could tell!

I should say you've told me I'm on the right track. I just started querying a story about a small dragon, so it's out of my mind right now. My new story has to do with an old man, hidden knowledge, one character is represented by an owl and another by a monkey. So actually this reading kind of builds the fire and tells me to get going.

For you, from the Shapeshifter Tarot, I drew card 0, Initiation. From a whirling chaos of the elements rises a person who is also a dragon, a butterfly and a dragonfly following into the heavens. The sun shines in the distance, and an apple in the foreground, the fruit of knowledge and wisdom, carried handy, but untasted. The staff in your hand glows.

You have all the tools you need, but you need to be willing to step (or fly) into the void, to set your feet on a path you've not yet mapped. Sure, it's a risk, but so is every new beginning.

Look at that monkey there, sitting on the rocks. He's hiding from something, but he can't help peeking. Is it dread, or hope? Whatever it is, the ineffective attempt to hide is only keeping his hands too busy to do anything else. You use stone to build, after all, and there's pretty stones all around. Whatever you're dealing with, you need be aware of enough that you can make strategic moves--that's a chess piece right there. The amber scarab sitting there is like a pool of warm sunlight, reminding you that little things can make a huge difference.

The first stone my finger pauses at is a pink stone, ridged naturally like a rose, but it's not quite right, it's just there telling me that there are many aspects to your question, and then it's done, and my fingers move on.

The first thing that actually calls to me to be part of your reading is the old, worn walking liberty half-dollar, which shines at your head like the full moon. Then the image of an ancient goddess, a fairy wing on one side and an amethyst lingam on the other. At her feet is an ammonite, named for the god, Amon Ra, but inherently the fossilized remains of a creature that lived before the first human set foot on the earth. These are all powerful symbols, and I'm sure you'll see meanings here that I don't, for I get the sense that part of this message id direct from the universe to your heart.

For your healing, look to your own connection with that you hold sacred, but don't neglect the physical, the sensual, or the whimsical on your journey.

The Challenge of New Things

Date: 2011-09-26 02:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wyld-dandelyon.livejournal.com
Rai-Kunabei looks up as you settle down under the tree. "Welcome. It's a beautiful day, isn't it?"

You nod. The wind is rustling gently through the autumn trees, the leaves dry enough to highlight even the lightest breeze. The bells on the houses sound gently from time to time.

She reaches into the bag and pulls out three disks, the first two iron and the last bronze. She sets them in front of you as they come out, each image skewed a little sideways.

"Your first image, the Mountain, stands for the natural aspects of your situation. The mountain is the challenging aspect of land, at once the source of our wealth and the realm where we encounter wraiths. Whatever this reading is about, the abundance and dangers of the mountain are the landscape in which you must work.

The second image, in the man-made or technological spot, can represent man-made challenges, but is more often the skills or tools you need to deal with the problems you will encounter. This is an ancient seaside, a place that for all the sundered years existed only in history and mythology. I'm not sure how distant history and mythology are either a challenge or a tool, but perhaps that will make more sense to you.

Finally, in the abstract spot, we have birth, the embodiment of natural beginnings. It's possible you're beginning an endeavor, but the abstract disk is rarely so obvious in its meaning. Perhaps there's something about creating new beginnings that is important to your success.

She lets you look at the disks for a few minutes, and you look at the fine, detailed enamel work. An older woman was waiting behind you, and Rai-Kunabei waved her forward. They start discussing the design for the new Salamander disk, and you join the conversation, ending up with an invitation to look over all of the disks in the bag, which are the disks made for Rai-Konalei, Kunabei's great grandmother. With great pride, they show you the first few disks in the set that is being made for Rai-Kunabei.

You sit there talking about art and symbolism and Kuleilyi mythology until dinnertime, and then continue the conversation indoors over good food.

Here--look, you get the ceramic bell, a wake-up call or dinner call, perhaps. With it comes the strange plastic alien from my childhood, followed by a newer toy alien and a real alien--a dried seahorse from the ocean. Finally, a Mardi Gras-style coin that I got at the World Con in New Orleans. This is a reminder that dreams may change, as you grow and learn--no, that's not quite right. The center, the yearning, be it for the strange and wonderful or the beautiful and wondrous--that remains. So long as you keep that sense of wonder, you will never lack for inspiration.

From: [identity profile] wyld-dandelyon.livejournal.com
For you, from the Shapeshifter's Tarot, the Goddess of Water. The most simple interpretation is it arrived upright, a yes answer to a yes or no question.

The woman is rising up out of the water, feathers sprouting from her arms and shoulders, her white hair rising to form a swan's neck. She has flowers in her hair and flower petals and water drops fill the air around her. She moves forward without looking back, but she looks a little lonely to me. Remember to reach out to your friends, old and new, as well as following your dreams.
