Three (or one) Card Draw for Samhain
Oct. 31st, 2010 03:14 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Edit--I have work tomorrow, and NaNoWriMo starts tomorrow (technically, started at midnight) so I'd better close this to new requests. I'll do this again, though, so if you missed it this time, look for it to happen again in December.
Anyone who already left a request, I'll respond soon, most likely tomorrow night. Thanks for stopping by!
I haven't done one of these before, here in LJ-land. But I really enjoy them when other people do them.
Of course, the usual disclaimers apply -- a card reading can't substitute for professional advice. If you need a doctor or lawyer or financial planner, etc., that's not me. If I can provide some entertainment, or help you get in touch with your own higher power(s) or inner muse(s), on the other hand, I'm glad to be of service.
One of the things I've thought was great about many of these readings is that I get to glimpse different ways of doing readings, people's individual decks, or stone readings, and so on. So I'm bringing a unique "deck" to this reading--one I created for Torn World, as well as some more conventional cards.
One interesting feature of Torn World that isn't really visible in the stories is that there are three classes of noun--natural, technological, and abstract. Language shapes how people think; I suspect that having three classes of things will have significant effects on their culture; one of the things I wanted to do with this divination "deck" (the Kuleilyi actually place the images on metal disks, because metal and sounds are important to their religion/magic system); only children and apprentices work with paper or wooden copies). The specifics of the divination disks are still being reviewed by the canon board, so this is a sneak-peek for my friends, old and new.
So, anyway, THE RULES: You can leave a question or not, as you choose. The question can be for you, personally, for a creative endeavor, for a fictional character in a work in progress, or a request for inspiration. The default, if you don't specify, will be a three-card Torn World reading, much as Bai-Kunabei might give if you were to get a reading from her. Alternatively, you can ask for a one card reading from the Daughters of the Moon Tarot, or the Shapeshifter's Tarot. A final option is to ask for a Guide from the combined deck I made out of Susan Seddon Boulet's Goddesses and Animal Spirits.
Payment: No payment is necessary, but this does take time and energy. Any tips will be gratefully appreciated and applied to the "Get a Laptop that doesn't crash when it overheats" fund, since even with the little fan-table underneath, this laptop has crashed in the middle of me trying to write twice this week.
Time period: this being the first time I've done this here, I don't know what to expect. My current plan is to leave the post open for requests until at least midnight, but if the response gets overwhelming, I may close it sooner. I will edit the post (in nice bold letters at the top) when I close to new requests. If you get your request in by closing, I'll do a reading, either today or soon.

Date: 2010-10-31 09:26 pm (UTC)"Your first image, which represents the natural, living world that is pertinent to your question is Snow, the silent expanse of winter, water frozen in deceptively peaceful state, more than enough to drown you, ready to freeze you or bury you alive. Snow is the dangerous aspect of water, treat your subject matter carefully."
She looks from you to the next disc. "The next symbol is Storm, which is also a card of water. This creative endeavor will challenge your skills and call on your resources and your resourcefulness, as well as touching on things that you care about deeply."
The final disc shows a body in a shroud. "And for the abstract aspects, you get Corpse, the symbol of personal tragedy, of endings, and also of the family and friends who have to let the dead person go, and get on with their lives, though it seems impossible at the time."
She lets you gaze at the images, worked in metal and enameled with bright, melted glass. "Will the meeting serve you both? That is hard to say. This could be a good reading if you are making a weapon, or writing a tragedy. Not so good, I think, if you are writing love poetry."

Date: 2010-10-31 09:52 pm (UTC)The first is an iron disk, showing the night sky. "The first image is Void, showing that he has many challenges to face, but also plenty of time and space to face them in."
The second disk is made of brass, and shows a person of indeterminate gender, one foot lifted and arms outstretched. She nods, "Dancer. An abstract image to represent the things in his life." She ponders for a moment. "It won't matter so much how much stuff he has, as what he does with it." She picks up the disk, which had been just out of his reach, and hands it to him so he can run his fingers over the shiny image. "You need to learn to dance, young man--to gracefully make the most of your tools and skills, whatever they will be." She looks back at you. "It was dancing saved my life, you know, when I met the wraith high in the mountains."
Then she turns to the final disk, which is made of copper and shows an infant with wide eyes. "And finally, Newborn, a natural card in the abstract position, here to show what thoughts and attitudes are pertinent. This little one's mind is busy doing exactly what he needs right now, looking out at the world, learning about everything, and learning to think about everything that matters."
She shakes her bells over him again, and he looks up, reaching for them. In the process, he drops the Dancer, which she quietly gathers up with her other disks and returns them to her bag. "Blessings for you both, mother and son."

Date: 2010-10-31 10:04 pm (UTC)The scarab is a powerful guide, and it can help you face tasks that seem as impossible as herding the sun through the sky. It also advises that you must not forget to attend to your daily tasks, and that you should seek inspiration from your loved ones as well as your dreams.

Date: 2010-10-31 10:17 pm (UTC)She turns to the next disk, a child looking curiously at something just out of the image. This disk is copper, where the first one was iron. "Perhaps you do. The skills, the tools that matter to your question are those of the child, the natural learner, and look--"
she holds out the final disk, made of gold or some gold alloy, since it isn't damaged from being in the pouch with all the heavy iron disks. It shows a person, an adult. "The Neuter--the person whose gender is indeterminate, or doesn't matter, because what matters is ideas."
She smiles at you. "Interesting. Thank you for stopping by. I--perhaps you could show me some of your art, one day, when I'm not so busy." She gestures at the waiting people, and shakes her bells in blessing for you.

Date: 2010-10-31 10:58 pm (UTC)"You fist disk, the card of the things you cannot control, is Dragon." It's an iron disk, and the dragon depicted on it looks fierce and deadly. "The forces causing your difficulties may be just myths in their essence, but the effects on the real world are extensive and dangerous."
The second disk is made of silver, and shows a circle of tree branches depicting the seasons. "The tool you need to manage is depicted by the Year-Wheel. You can't speed things up, so you have to manage your resources to get through the hard times."
The final disk is also silver, and shows a shiny city of high-rises. "The final card is the Ancient World, the world before the Upheaval, before the world was sundered into fragmentary shards of what it was before." She looks at you quizically. "Did your world have a disaster too?" Then she shrugged. "No matter. The things you need to know to face this challenge have been handed down to you from your ancestors."

Date: 2010-10-31 11:14 pm (UTC)Then she pulls three disks, all iron, out of her bag. She smiles, looking at the first disk, showing a beautiful woman in rainbow robes.
"You get your wish. Your first disk is the Muse. Inspiration is all around you, though it may not take the form you expect. The tools you need to access it--" she taps the second disk, which shows a young man holding a bouquet of flowers. "The Suitor. You need to take a little time with your Muse, let her know you're paying attention to her, to get her attention."
Then she turned to the final disk, which shows a strange, short man in a circle of rocks. "And your last card is the Rock Tender. You have to tend the ideas you get from the muse, spend the time and the materials needed to bring them into reality." She smiles again, "The rock tender is a powerful ally for smiths and other creative people. I look forward to seeing the fruits of your inspiration."

Date: 2010-10-31 11:27 pm (UTC)The first is enameled a beautiful, clear blue. "Ah," she smiles, "The Clear Blue sky, and--" she points at the second, which is enameled as a dark, star-filled sky, "The Void." The nurturing and challenging aspects of sky. You may feel somewhat an alien in this material world, but your possibilities are wide open, and these don't show any big mistakes.
She picks up the final disk, which shows human figures enameled in bright, rainbow colors. "And Community, the card of learning from each other, everyone teaching and learning at the same time. Does that answer your question?"

Date: 2010-10-31 11:53 pm (UTC)She pulls our three disks, copper, bronze, and iron. Ah. In the natural position you have Books. Is that an indication that the man is more rooted in fantasy or scholarship than the physical world? Or perhaps you are interacting with him mostly at a distance, mostly through words?"
She looks over at you, but doesn't see the answer in your expression. "Either way, your next disk is Creation." The disk shows an anvil, with a red-hot piece of iron being beaten into some shape. "The future can still be shaped, and you--or perhaps more accurately, the two of you--have the tools to do the shaping."
Then she turns to the final disk, the fierce Dragon. "The biggest danger is in your thoughts, and in his. Are the two sets of expectations, yours and his, harmonious or conflicting? If you don't know enough about each other to know that," she taps the first disk, "then spend some more time learning about each other's nature."
She looks up at you. "I do wish you luck! Would you like a blessing?" She lifts the bells, careful not to shake them, unless you nod.

Date: 2010-11-01 01:06 am (UTC)"You spoil her, Bai!" The child protested.
The shaman turns her attention to you as the goat follows the child, chewing contentedly on the carrot. "I ask myself that too, you know. Is it really better to do blessings and readings for people than to herd goats or grow food? But let's see if I can offer you any useful insight."
She reaches into the bag, and draws out three iron disks. The first has green grass and white flowers in bright enamel. "Meadow--sheltered, fertile land. You are in good circumstances, overall. The things you can't control are not posing any problems related to your question."
Then she pushes forward the next two disks. "Here you have the challenging aspects of Sound and Water. She runs her finger over the thunderstorm depicted on the final disk, the lightning bold shining in the sunlight. "Your thoughts are troubled, even though that may not show on the surface. But," she lifts the central disk, which shows a graceful shepherd's harp. "you have the skills to bring harmony to your existence. Listen to the music you make in your daily life. Does it match the meadow or the storm? Not that storms are always bad--without rain, after all, there's no flowers. But it is also true that without sun, there will be no flowers."
She smiles kindly at you. "I see that it is a challenge for you to understand how best to use your skills and energy. But you also have the ability to perceive it if you cause dissonance, so long as you pay attention. There's more than one right path; you are free to choose between the right paths so long as you avoid the wrong ones."

Date: 2010-11-01 01:55 am (UTC)She pulls out two more disks, bronze and iron. The first depicts some glass thing being smashed with a hammer, and the second shows a staff tipped with bells, much like the one propped up behind her, though the one on the disk does not have a burnt ball-whistle tied to it. "Ah. First is destruction, which looks alarming, but some things do need to end. And the final image is Blessing Bells. So you do need to take decisive action to end whatever is causing the problem, you need to do it in a way that takes the good of all concerned into account. The sound of blessing bells will drive away wraiths and other misfortune, but it is a blessing for all people, not just for some."
She smiles, "This doesn't show me what needs ending at your place of work, but the presence of Blessing Bells in a reading is always a good sign. Good luck with it."

This is the contradictory aspect of land, trees that strive to reach the sky, and while they never can, they create beauty in the attempt."
She pulls out another disk, this one silver, with enameling in greys and browns. "The tools you use are represented by the Cave -- the symbol of natural space. Your tools are my whole world, natural to me but artificial to you."
Then she pulls out the final disk, another iron disk, with an image of lowland drums. "Drums!" She laughs. "I suggest you don't play those up here, not while you're visiting. Drums can set feet to dancing, or bring snow, rocks, and mud down on the village."
Then she looks at you as if she can see through your Torn World costume, right through to the real you sitting at your computer. "But danger makes for exciting stories. You should see the little kids' eyes shine when I talk about dancing up there in the mountains, and my ball whistle killing the wraith. It wasn't so much fun to live through as to tell it, though. But that's your project, telling our stories. Don't be afraid to make a joyous noise while you do it! Make your listeners remember us, ok?"

Date: 2010-11-01 05:09 am (UTC)The first disk is brass and has enamel colors dropped on it in a strange, patternless texture. The second has no enamel at all, just different types of metal swirled together. And the final disk is copper, with colors inlaid in a delicate symmetrical mandala.
"Ah, first you have Random. the most important circumstances that brought you to this point were not planned by anyone, they are no one's fault, and especially not yours. It's just the way it is, the natural world is, well natural, and stuff happens that just happens."
Her finger runs over the smooth enamel, but her eyes have moved on. "The tools you have to do things in the physical world--this disk is the symbol of Mystery. Is mystery itself your tool? Or do you need to find your tools still?" Then she smiles, "Or do you know your tools just fine, and it's none of my business?"
She picks up the final disk. "Ah, but here, see? This is the Mandala. Whatever chaos and mystery surrounds your life, you have found some success in ordering your thoughts. Look how pretty this is--this represents your mind, the mental skills you are bringing to the problem that brings you to me. You may not be able to impose order on the world around you, but you will be able to bring order and beauty to the things you do and and the things you make."

Date: 2010-11-01 11:31 pm (UTC)She reaches into the bag and pulls out the image of a Storm, which slips from her hand into the air. You catch it. "Oh, my, you do like your challenges, don't you?"
The iron disk is heavy in your hand, reminding you of all the troubles that have found you this year.
Unperturbed, Bai-Kunabei reaches again into the bag. "Let's see what tools you will need to manage the all of the storms in your life." She pulls out a copper disk, and turns it over to show the curious child. It is oriented so it is looking toward the road to the Empire, and beyond it, the arctic north. The shaman cocks her head to the side and looks at you. "Interesting. The disks don't show any physical tools, but instead show confidence that you can learn to use whatever tools and techniques are needed."
She reaches into the bag again. "And the abstract tools you need?" She pulls out a silver disk, on which is depicted a cozy little house. "The House? How can a house be an abstract tool? Somehow, you have made, or must make, a space that is a home of sorts for people." She gathers up the disks and returns them to her bag. "My, what interesting readings I've had today. You travel in interesting company."

Date: 2010-11-02 12:26 am (UTC)You reach inside, feeling the heavy metal disks, cool under your fingertips. One calls to your fingers, smooth and pleasant to touch. You pull it out. The top is gold, polished smooth.
"Turn it over," says the shaman.
You do, and you see a picture that almost might be her.
She smiles. "Ah, see? The Shaman. That's a very fortuitous image for someone interested in spiritual matters. That image represents your nature, your inner self. Now let's see what physical and mental tools you need for your current journey."
You wait, and she waves you to the bag again. "You're doing fine. Let's see what you pull out next."
Next you pull out a silver disk with an image of a moon obscuring the sun.
"The eclipse." She nods. Another abstract aspect. It is very like a shaman to use abstract ideas as her most solid tools. What do the moons and sun mean to you?"
You start to open your mouth, and she shakes her head. "No, don't answer me now. That's a question you must answer as you use them as your tools, and the answer may change. Go ahead, pick the last disk."
This time the disk your fingers claim is rougher, and you pull out an iron disk showing three star clusters.
"Ah, these are the Constellations that guide us through the darkest night. Mama Cougar, the Storyteller, and The Bright Dancer. When your thoughts reach the farthest, you're the closest to home." She laughed. "You'll make a fine shaman, or whatever you call it in your own tradition," she pauses and looks deep into your eyes, "If you want to, and if you put the work into it. If not--" she shrugs. "You can't change your basic nature, but it's up to you what you do with it."

Date: 2010-11-02 01:46 am (UTC)She pulls out the next disk, a solid iron disk showing a plain wooden door. "Each door is a border. You can only walk through one at a time. This image tells you that the first step in making anything at all is picking one thing to try, committing to it, making what you can of it, and learning from the experience, and the result. Pick a door--at random, if you have no better way to choose, and check out what's beyond it for a little while. You'll learn more working on one project than you will pondering all the things you could be creating, and in not choosing, leaving all of their possibilities closed." Then she smiles, "And of course, when you're finished with the room beyond the first door, you can move on to another, with more skill and more experience to help you choose what to do next."
Then she reaches into the bag again, and pulls out a brass disk. A torch is depicted on it, the enamels glowing in the sunlight like the fire they depict. "And don't be afraid to shine a light in all the dark corners."

Date: 2010-11-02 02:11 am (UTC)She reaches into the bag again, and pulls out a iron disk depicting a rope bridge. "Interesting. The rope bridge is one of the cards of borders; here I think it means that you use borders--limits, if you will--and challenges as tools in this situation."
She places the rope bridge on the ground between you. "And one more disk, to represent the mental tools you will need." She pulls out a silver disk, the Eclipse. "By moving in accord with your own nature, you can bring things together, or block them from view. Thus, you create a singular event that focuses everyone's attention, allowing all to safely navigate the challenges that you provided them with in the first place. Are you a teacher, perhaps? Or a guide of some sort?"

Date: 2010-11-02 03:26 am (UTC)She shakes her head. "Clearly, you--or somebody--must introduce some new influence if this situation is to be resolved. But what?" She reaches into the bag again, and pulls out another disk. "The Forest. I suspect the people involved need a chance to disengage, to get some perspective on the situation. The forest is a place that is not truly of the land, but equally not of the sky, though it takes on aspects of both. Thus it is an in-between place, where magical things can happen, and relationships can be transformed." She looks at you. "This may not be a literal forest, you realize. It might not even be a literal place. But this situation won't change until people are inspired by something to let go of the entrenched habits and reactions that are keeping them in it."
She leans back and stretches, looking at the four disks. "I'm not even sure you're a part of this mess. If you're not, it might not be your place to try to change things--you could get snared in it and everyone mad at you, which would be a change, to be sure, but probably not one you desire."
