wyld_dandelyon: A cat-wizard happily writing, by Tod (a wizard writing)

The main thing that stalled me in this story was getting a temp job that just didn't leave me with energy to do much, but that was only part of the problem. I probably could have kept things moving forward if I'd known where the story was going. Now I have a clear idea, but I need a villain. So, I'm taking prompts for villains. Please leave suggestions in the comments![Poll #1768742]I look forward to reading your suggestions!  (If anyone suggests someone else in comments, feel free to add votes in comments.)

Thanks!

P.S.  For my new friends, the story in question starts here:  Feather-Blessed

Perhaps a dragon who got stuck and pretends like he (I tend towards a he) chose to stay and resents the girls' desire to go, etc?

I'm also tending toward a "he", although so far all the major characters are female...I have to think about the world I'm painting, I guess.

Is it bad I didn't recognize half the names in your list? >_>

I don't know that it necessarily requires a villain... so much as that it could be a mystery. Characters versus environment, characters versus their own issues, etc. Who sent out the feathers, what are their real objectives, are these objectives necessarily good from Grace and Stella's point of view, etc.

What if... They manage to find Home, but Home sounds like a really saccharine version of My Little Pony, with some 'benevolent wizard-queen ruling wisely over everyone' and everyone doing service with little or no personal freedom because it never occurs to them that it could be otherwise, or they feel 'with great power comes great responsibility', etc.?

What if... They manage to find Home, but it turns out that they aren't wanted, the feathers are relics of some process that existed in the past to recruit more dragon/faeries/supernaturals, but now there is only so much magic to go around, and if they come in, they'll dilute the magic that much more? Overpopulation! And what if the magical fields of Earth are stronger due to not having been used in centuries - would that lead to a desire to invade Earth and take the magic back?

It's true that stories don't always require a villain, but I've been thinking about this one for a while, and I've found a plotline that feels right, and that plot needs a villain. So I'm going with a villain.

An overprotective, allegedly-benevolent wizard-queen is a villain, however!

As to the names, Charlie Chaplin is/was an actor; the rest are fictional characters, mostly from science fiction or fantasy films or series.

Sure, but maybe if you included links to the series, people could read up on them. :) I recognized FMA, Chaplin, Xena, Snape, blanking on the others!

Derek Morgan's kind of the odd man out, being one of the agents on Criminal Minds.

Bellana Torres is the half-Klingon engineer on Star Trek Voyager.

Ripley is from the Aliens movies. (I should admit I only know her first name because I Googled it.)

I vaguely thought that could have been it, but I was blanking on whether Ripley was first or last name!

I voted for Charles Chaplin myself, because I could just picture him looking sad and disappointed at the miscreants. ^_^

I like this idea!

Gosh, I don't even know how to watch TV series online, much less to link to them!

For the policeman: Rupert Giles (Buffy's Watcher, the librarian)

Oh!

Yes, I can see he would work.

I wonder how a librarian would work as a villain?

Also, welcome!

Is the police image Stella produces supposed to somehow also tie into the villain? I had read that as two separate questions/characters.

I had considered Buffy, as opposed to Giles, but went with the latter for two reasons: 1) Giles, his history notwithstanding, was the avatar of law (or at least rules) and order, and 2) I couldn't picture Buffy in police uniform convincingly. (I can picture her wearing it as a costume, but not as her own, if you know what I mean.)

You're correct--this is unrelated to the villain. At this point in the story, they have no clue they will have a challenge to overcome that is more problematic than surviving until they can find their way to their new Home.

W. C. Fields was my first thought.

But that one led me to Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, and Winston Churchill.

(Although I'll confess I liked Charlie Chaplin, and laughed out loud at Torres.)

I like that "laughed out loud" reaction!

Lots of interesting suggestions, too.

Good to see you here.

2 thoughts:

1) GI Joe

2) what if it isn't anyone specific you name but a group of people (ie--the police, a soldier, National Guard)? That might make it appeal to more of your audience who might not recognise the names?

As to #1, do they even have those toys any more? I don't think this will work for a girl-turned-dragon unless I give her gender issues, however.

In response to #2, it loses the humor value if it's not someone specific and recognizable. However, finding the right name--so the audience does recognize it, and laugh--is important.

Hmm...in that vein, if I go with someone in the Buffyverse, maybe Buffy would be a better choice than Giles--you don't have to have seen the show to know her name. On the other hand, is Stella focused on a female role model or a romantic lead? That point develops her character, and could hint at how she'll react in a crisis later, and what kind of crisis would be a good challenge for her to overcome.

I voted for Full Metal Alchemist specifically because I only recognized a couple of names on the list myself; FMA is NOT one of them, but just the name, I get a compelling image that I recognize as intended to be amusing.
With that in mine, you might want to go with a broad archetype for broad appeal.

I think the humor works better if I use a specific media image rather than an archetype. I can always add a bit of reference, rather than only the name (i.e. Ripley from the Aliens movies) to help jog people's memories.

Maybe I should ask the YA writers for suggestions, since if I can market it to a publisher, it will be for a younger audience

This is proving to be a more interesting and thought-provoking poll than I expected.

Yep, I do think they have those toys still. But you are right, a Girl-Turned-Dragon might not work as well for GI Joe.

And I understand, you're looking for something to lighten this part. I'll keep it in mind and see if anything comes to mind. :)

What if there's a feather-blessed dragon or gryphon who wants to get more magic, to become an even faster/stronger creature? Who knows how it goes around, finding fairies and dragons and gryphons left behind, and taking away their magic?

That's an interesting thought. Not sure if it fits with my plot...I'll ponder it a while, though.
