The main thing that stalled me in this story was getting a temp job that just didn't leave me with energy to do much, but that was only part of the problem. I probably could have kept things moving forward if I'd known where the story was going. Now I have a clear idea, but I need a villain. So, I'm taking prompts for villains. Please leave suggestions in the comments![Poll #1768742]I look forward to reading your suggestions! (If anyone suggests someone else in comments, feel free to add votes in comments.)
Thanks!
P.S. For my new friends, the story in question starts here: Feather-Blessed

Date: 2011-08-11 02:31 am (UTC)I don't know that it necessarily requires a villain... so much as that it could be a mystery. Characters versus environment, characters versus their own issues, etc. Who sent out the feathers, what are their real objectives, are these objectives necessarily good from Grace and Stella's point of view, etc.
What if... They manage to find Home, but Home sounds like a really saccharine version of My Little Pony, with some 'benevolent wizard-queen ruling wisely over everyone' and everyone doing service with little or no personal freedom because it never occurs to them that it could be otherwise, or they feel 'with great power comes great responsibility', etc.?
What if... They manage to find Home, but it turns out that they aren't wanted, the feathers are relics of some process that existed in the past to recruit more dragon/faeries/supernaturals, but now there is only so much magic to go around, and if they come in, they'll dilute the magic that much more? Overpopulation! And what if the magical fields of Earth are stronger due to not having been used in centuries - would that lead to a desire to invade Earth and take the magic back?

As to the names, Charlie Chaplin is/was an actor; the rest are fictional characters, mostly from science fiction or fantasy films or series.

Date: 2011-08-11 03:41 am (UTC)Bellana Torres is the half-Klingon engineer on Star Trek Voyager.
Ripley is from the Aliens movies. (I should admit I only know her first name because I Googled it.)

I like this idea!

Date: 2011-08-11 03:29 am (UTC)I wonder how a librarian would work as a villain?
Also, welcome!
Re: Oh!
Date: 2011-08-11 03:30 pm (UTC)I had considered Buffy, as opposed to Giles, but went with the latter for two reasons: 1) Giles, his history notwithstanding, was the avatar of law (or at least rules) and order, and 2) I couldn't picture Buffy in police uniform convincingly. (I can picture her wearing it as a costume, but not as her own, if you know what I mean.)

Date: 2011-08-11 03:54 am (UTC)But that one led me to Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, and Winston Churchill.
(Although I'll confess I liked Charlie Chaplin, and laughed out loud at Torres.)

2) what if it isn't anyone specific you name but a group of people (ie--the police, a soldier, National Guard)? That might make it appeal to more of your audience who might not recognise the names?

Date: 2011-08-11 12:38 pm (UTC)In response to #2, it loses the humor value if it's not someone specific and recognizable. However, finding the right name--so the audience does recognize it, and laugh--is important.
Hmm...in that vein, if I go with someone in the Buffyverse, maybe Buffy would be a better choice than Giles--you don't have to have seen the show to know her name. On the other hand, is Stella focused on a female role model or a romantic lead? That point develops her character, and could hint at how she'll react in a crisis later, and what kind of crisis would be a good challenge for her to overcome.

Date: 2011-08-11 12:45 pm (UTC)With that in mine, you might want to go with a broad archetype for broad appeal.

Date: 2011-08-11 05:18 pm (UTC)Maybe I should ask the YA writers for suggestions, since if I can market it to a publisher, it will be for a younger audience
This is proving to be a more interesting and thought-provoking poll than I expected.
