I kept being busy or tired or busy-and-tired, and didn't write this up last Wednesday, like I should have.
So, two Thursdays ago I got home and saw something in the dimness on the floor in a curl of cat hair. Oh, wonderful, I thought, a hairball. I grabbed a paper towel and immediately changed my mind. Seen closer, the shape was clearly mouse. Take a step toward the light and I changed my mind again. It was a bat.
Now, I live in the land of the Milwaukee Protocol, which means I'm all too aware that bats can carry Rabies, and the only success so far was a very young girl. I'm not a very young girl any more, nor is Mystique_Muse. The bat was dead and on the floor. Somebody killed it, and Somebodies (probably all of them) played with it. Oh, this was not the adventure I'd planned for the evening.
So I called the Vet's office, who said to call the Humane Society, who said if I could get it to them fast enough, they'd keep it on ice overnight (in their refrigerator, rather than mine with my food--win~!) and turn it over to the health department. So, off I went to the Humane Society, with a cute little dead critter in one of
mystique_muse/ My Angel's oversized pill bottles. They whisked the thing away before I even started filling out the paperwork--bats have tiny brains, and decayed brains don't yield reliable results for the rabies test.
No call from the Health Department the next day, and the call to the old vet's office confirmed that the rabies shots were long overdue in any case. I wasn't going to wait until after the long weekend to see if rabies shots (which were not in this month's budget) were urgent right now or not. So my long weekend started with taking all four cats to the vet, in all three of our cat carriers. (Thanks to
filkart and
ithiriel for the hand-me-down bulky heavy-as-H-E-double-toothpics carrier. We needed it.)
The luck of the draw put the biggest cat in the smallest carrier--the look on the vet's assistant's face as we pulled the very reluctant Fayah out of the carrier was priceless. He hates carriers, but would rather hide in there than play with the vet!
So, they all got rabies shots and flea treatments, and we had our weekend. Tuesday, the health department called, and said they hoped to get an answer from the lab that afternoon. But the lab was too busy. I didn't get the answer until Wednesday, which happily was negative. Thank goodness! Rabies shots for humans wasn't in the budget either.
Besides, we love our kitties! We're so glad they're all safe.
