Coffeehouse Talent Contest

Tomorrow (yes, I know it's after midnight, and so, is technically Saturday already, but I refuse to believe it's "tomorrow" yet if I haven't had my "long winter's nap", at least not unless the sun has risen). Anyway. Tomorrow, Saturday, at 8:00 p.m. the 19th Street Coffeehouse's annual talent contest starts. Since I survived the auditions, I will be playing three songs.
Wish me luck!
You're welcome to come cheer me on.
I'd feel a lot more positive about it if my back wasn't all stiff, and affecting my finger dexterity. But hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Date: 2010-02-20 08:47 am (UTC)I just did a (under-dressed) rehearsal, which was better than the one I attempted before I laid down on the bed to crack my back.

Best of luck though. Break a leg!

Date: 2010-02-20 07:42 pm (UTC)I'll be interested to hear what you choose to perform, and how well it reaches an audience that's presumably mundane but less dull than a random crowd off the streets.

Date: 2010-02-20 09:02 pm (UTC)And I did my Coyote Afoot; though I didn't see lots of audience reaction, a number of people told me they liked it or thought the lyrics were clever. And I did get invited back to the final round of the contest.
For tonight, I'd initially planned an autoharp instrumental, probably Planxty George Brabazon, but with my main playing finger on my right hand sore like I jammed it somehow, and the left hand with pins-and-needles, I don't have any confidence I'd do it well. And Art and Cynthia have asked me to do Velveteen for the wedding. So I'll do that, my Imbolc Song if my left hand's not too bad off (and probably Pagan Angel if it's bothering me) and Lullabye for a Weary World. I think all of those will be easily accessible for a folk audience.
There's actually a lot of stuff that's played at filks that is accessible to a folk audience; I also have a number of songs that really are folk, and just don't fit into most filks. Though, as a result, I'm rustier playing them.

Date: 2010-02-22 12:57 am (UTC)I've pretty much stopped worrying about whether songs I sing are "folk" or "filk". I try to pick songs that I think are good songs and that I can do halfway well. I always pick songs that I feel like singing.
