I just found word that my story, Harp of Feathers, won the Torn World music-theme Short Story Contest, which was judged by novelist CE Murphy, who said, "This was a great evocative piece and really gave me a sense of history for the world as well as doing an excellent job with characterization. I really enjoyed it.!"
You can read it, and see the new artwork I did for the contest, here:
And just to show that you can't predict these things at all, my painting of Kunabei, the protagonist in Dance to Fend Off the Sky, which I also submitted to the contest, won the art portion of the contest. I look at that painting and, like feel like Liberace, who said he does't listen to his own recordings, because all he noticed was "the defect". Head over to read the story and see the finished work, but for my friends, here's a flashback to the first progress picture I took of the winning painting.
And all the entries included a write-up of the musical instruments involved--you can see and read about the Musical Instruments of Torn World by Elizabeth Barrette, Valerie Higgins, Ellen M. Million , and Deirdre M. Murphy . I urge you to go check out my co-conspirators!
I look forward to linking you to the other entries in the future, or you can go here to get an e-mail notice of new material (including contest entries, as they are published) by any of your favorite Torn World writers and artists. If you signed up for e-mail notices before, and haven't gotten any, you should go check to see if your choices are still checked--Ellen recently fixed the code for this page, as it wasn't working for everyone.
The next Torn World contest judges will be--YOU! I'll link you to the voting page when the time comes.
