Hah--you got me! I mostly stopped taking books out of the library when I realized that, for paperbacks, at least, it was often cheaper to buy them than to pay overdue fines because I got busy and lost track of when they were due. And paying overdue fines on a book you haven't yet had the chance to read is just wrong!
