I saw the Worldcon Philharmonic Orchestra tonight

Loncon gathered a symphony orchestra and arranged a science-fiction and fantasy-themed concert, and it was

AMAZING

The musicians were wonderul, and the music well-chosen. I'd never really thought of Worldcon as a cultural spectacle before, but this made me realize that just like the Olympics is a celebration of one aspect of humanity at its best, Worldcon is a celebration of a different aspect of humanity at its best.

I'm sorry you couldn't all be there with me. I was surprisingly touched to hear a live symphony performance of Star Trek themes. For all the flaws in the TV shows and movies, they have adhered to the shows original vision, that not only will we survive, but we can overcome our violent past and have not only _a_ future, but a better future. It brought tears to my eyes to hear world-class musicians honoring my people, honoring speculative fiction, and especially honoring that particular vision and hope for the future.

In the light of the terrible things in the news this week, that's a reminder that I sorely needed.

I wish you all could have been with me.

If hope they made and will be selling a recording.

Something I've mentioned a bazillion times, but maybe you missed it: In the original Hornblower book, the ship is becalmed in the south pacific, and two sailors are arguing about whether the captain will ever get them out of the doldrums, and one finally bets a large amount of money that he will, and the other takes the bet. Of course, the captain does get them out, and when the loser pays off, he asks the winner how he could have been so sure, and the winner explains that he wasn't sure at all, it had simply occurred to him that if he died in the south pacific, we wouldn't need the money anyway. So, yeah, smart money always bets on the future.

Smart money first must be in the moment so as to see the needs of those around them. Living only for the future leads to what I will cal 'blind horse syndrome'.

Yes, we will meet on Mars someday but meanwhile, to quote Rodney King,"Can't...can't ..why can't we all just get along?".

Music always was a big part of my life, culture is grand, but sometimes culture lies; or it sits and spins like a whirling dervish.

The music filled my soul and gave me hope, and was in itself an example of how people CAN get along. You don't take dozens of people and get that kind of music without getting along, after all.

I read once that pessimists are right more often than optimists, but optimists get a lot more done. I'd rather believe in a good future and have the hope and energy to work to make it so.

Oh, no trip is ever perfect, but there were lots of great things about Loncon. I expect more great things from Shamrockon. And there will be more posts, as there are more things to share!
