(or "when to expect my cell phone to be off this weekend")

I will be busy at Duckon. I hope to arrive on Friday before Nate Bucklin's guitar workshop at 8, but I must be there before 9, as that's my first panel:

Friday, June 17
9:00 P.M. Vampires: Hidden Desires Unleashed or Misdirected? (Mahogany Ballroom I)
Descript: Vampires in TV programs and movies are glamorous, desirable, and loveable. Ancient folklore and myth view them in not so admirable ways. How did we reach the point where everyone wants to have his or her own vampire girl/boy friend?

Saturday, June 18
3:00 P.M. Reality of Science Fiction/Fantasy Character Roles in True Life (Mahogany Ballroom I)
Descript: How many fictional roles appearing in books, magazines and movies are actually feasible in the real world? Could a Mulder exist and encounter aliens?
5:00 P.M. How Writers Motivate Themselves to Write (Mahogany Ballroom II)

Sunday, June 19
10:00 A.M. Writing in Someone Else's World (Mahogany Ballroom II)
11:00 A.M. Autographing (Room 1212) (You will share the room with Michael Williams and Shirley Damsgaard)
1:00 P.M. Balancing Historical Fact and Fiction (Mahogany Ballroom I)
Descript: How do you change the past but still make a believable story? What percentage of facts do you really twist without totally convoluting the reality of your alternate history? When does changing too many facts completely negate an understandable, possible future?
2:00 P.M. Reading (Room 1210) (You will be dividing your hour with Kathryn Sullivan.)

Four things in five hours on Sunday...I will have to eat a real meal on Saturday, sometime.  If someone wants to do lunch or dinner, l with a person who has to be not only gluten-free but also corn-free, especially if you have some idea where to find healthy food that meets those qualifications, please let me know!

If you'll be at the con, I'd love to see you at any of the panels.  If not (or even if you will be there), you're welcome to kibitz ahead of time on any of the above topics.  I have a nice, roomy comment thread available here, after all!

(In other news, here's the first rose in our garden this year; the picture was taken Friday.)

No, they're not. I wonder if I have a recorder somewhere...that I can find and that has batteries.

I'd love to have you there, you know.

Enjoy and good luck on Sunday, looks pretty full on for the weekend but rewarding and interesting topics.

Beautiful rose!

I plan to have a good time. I would be more pleased to have the panels better distributed, or at least heavier on Saturday than Sunday, which is a much more natural convention rhythm for me. But it'll work out fine, I'm sure.

Thank you about the rose. I'll try to get more pictures posted this year than last. (-:

An interesting mix of panels you've got lined up. I hope you can make it to Nate's workshop. That should be fun. As to the tight schedule on Sunday, and the hope of eating, maybe you should arrange with Kathryn Sullivan for her to read first so you can grab a hefty snack that some kind friend might procure for you during the "Balancing Fact & Fiction" panel. Or am I living in that fantasy world of mine again?

Love your rose. I'll tell you about the denuded rose bush at my house some time. Sad.

Fantasy worlds are fun!

It may be a redux of a workshop I attended before, but it would still be fun.

Is your rose bush in need of nutrients or just politer neighbors?

It needs the eradication of certain hungry little green caterpillars. The voracious little monsters might turn into some good insect eventually, but they've stripped my small bush of its leaves. Makes it hard to care what they might become.

I don't know of any green caterpillars that eat rose leaves. Perhaps you need some praying mantises!

So, which panel(s) look most interesting to you?

I'd never heard of these 'pillars either and couldn't find the exact ones on the i'net. But I plucked and squished 29 one morning. Apparently I missed quite a few though.

I'd love to attend the "Reality...SFF Characters in True Life" and the "Writing in Someone Else's World". They sound like lots of fun. But the "How Writers Motivate Themselves to Write" would probably be the one I SHOULD see. I continually need to re-motivate myself, since I follow the Gemini tendency to get distracted (succumb to laziness and procrastination, in Mom-speak). ;~)

Sometimes you need to take a break, though. The hard part is to design at least some of the distractions so they point you back to the writing.

Hmmm, interesting viewpoint. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks.

That's one advantage of LJ for me.

Good luck!
