Torn World: Storm Wrack

One of the things that attracted me to Torn World is the fact that the Empire recognizes people aren't all male and all female. Being a huge bureaucracy, they do it poorly--everyone who isn't male or female is legally "no gender". But still, they do recognize it.

Those of you who've been watching Torn World are familiar with my character Lalya, who is in the process of getting licensed as a woman so he can marry his sweetie, Dini, who is also male, and who would lose his job as a female role actor if he was the one to legally change gender. This change is totally bureaucratic--they don't have magic or surgery to change people's bodies from male to female, but still, the change is an adventure that Lalya, who never thought much about gender, wasn't expecting.

More recently, however, I have tackled writing about someone who thinks about gender all the time, because Ferelye was born "no gender" (in our terms, intersex), in a part of the world where that is neither expected nor accepted, despite the new gender reform laws.

I'm very excited to offer you the link to Storm Wrack. This being Sea Monster Month, the story starts on a cliff by the sea. I hope you stop by and enjoy it.

That was an interesting treatment of a non-gendered person in Torn World. I like how the villagers were superstitious about Ferelye's situation, it reminds me of the religious superstition around gender benders, transsexuals and cross dressers in today's world.
