We keep hearing the advice, "Write what you know"--but is it always good advice?

Over here are a few words from a pair of authors that gives an interesting (and very amusing) counter-example.  And the chance to win a pdf copy of the story the anecdote is about!

I remember hearing Joe Haldeman say that "write what you know" is lousy advice because "That's why there are so many bad novels about English professors contemplating adultery."
