So, I ran out of time on my attempt to paint Lalya, and hit a point where I wanted it to dry well before continuing too, so, I actually started looking at the prompts.

Hmm...Lalya looks better in thumbnail than he does in the original.  Usually it's the other way; it's one of my favorite uses for my cell phone, because I see stuff that's all dreadful with my paintings, and then I can fix them...or at least try to.

Anyway, I started with the "moon blossom" prompt.  And too much flesh-tint paint, that I'd squeezed out of a tube with a broken lid, so putting the extra back before it dried out was not an option.

I think it would be cool to make this a Torn World plant, but my brain is now in visual mode, and I have no idea what kind of flower it should be, or where it grows, or if it's edible or poisonous or used for dye or medicine...or what.

That done, I had still more of the flesh tint paint (sheesh, I sure overdid that!), so I looked for something that I could start with a face or body or something...the prompt that snagged my brain was "save your soul".   Nothing was said in the prompt about who was saving the soul, or for what...

For the flower, I added mostly purples.

For Preserved Spirit, I added mostly browns, with a little bit of white and blue for contrast.

Now I have to decide whether I want to return to Lalya, who needs a lot of work, or try for a different prompt.

Do you folks have any advice?

I'm looking forward to seeing your Lalya all done! So far, he looks much more like I imagined him in this picture. Are you going to try the complicated brocade you described in the story?

Ooh--you want micropainting! I might do the brocade. That would be easier than the face, and I have to do the face!

I am not demanding micropainting -- just asking whether you were planning to go there. I suspect it would be difficult and time-consuming!

I'm pretty good at the micro-stuff, though it is time consuming. Faces and hands are harder to get right, and much more noticed.

These are cool starts on your paintings, I'd be interested in seeing how they develop further!

Hmmmmm, a bit late for me to suggest Layla vs prompts.

Actually, as you will see, it wasn't too late for you to make a suggestion for (what was for me) the next day. I like this 24-hour schedule!

Does the photographer in you have other comments?

LOL, I'm used to many things being opened and closed in the time I get up and get to the post.

I like the colours in Lalya's painting. That is a really nice blue and I think it makes a nice background with his flowing shirt/dress/clothes. It fits in my mind but I'm not sure why.

I am fascinated by the flower and how it's turned out (or would turn out if you were to spend some time finishing it).

What would you suggest in the way of fixing the flower?

I wouldn't say it's a "fix" because I don't see anything broken. I think it's pretty and am wondering if it's going towards the "pretty garden flower" type or the "gonna eat people" type :)

I'm starting to think that "tea for birth control" is the way to go for this flower. Would be a reason it's a "moonblossom". And we'd specified that the Empire has such a thing, just not where it came from.

The flower looks very orchid-like to me, so maybe an ornamental flower that's requires a lot of care...I'm not involved in Torn World, but I think there'd be a place for something like that on most worlds. :)

There would indeed! And it does look tropical. So in the northerly parts of the Empire, it may need to be grown indoors.

These look terrific. The Preserved Spirit is particularly intriguing, but that flower makes me think the petals are going to start waving around any second. Would a heal-all elixir made from the legendary flower that blooms on some rare occasion (or maybe just at dark of moon--to make it harder to find) on mountain tops or up north in the snow unicorn country or deep in the swamps be a valid Torn World tale?

Ooh--if Torn World were a fantasy world, I would SO go for the healing flower that only blooms in the dark, of the moon!!!

Though we have some limited time technology, and the ancients had lots of high tech, including advanced genetic engineering, I can't set up something to happen by magic. So heal-all elixirs are out.

Snake Oil is possible.

Or maybe birth control...

Ah. I forget that "no magic" element. Fantasy is such a pervasive factor in my life that I tend to see it's touch every where.

Whether you opt for birth control or snake oil, the bloom could still bloom in the dark of the moon--or some such. There are plants that only bloom at midnight or once every 50 years (I forget the exact # of years) or such in our own not-so-fantasy world. If you want to use that parameter, you could find a way to fold in some real life biology.

I do like fantasy!!! It's most of what I write when I'm not doing Torn World. :-D
