Have you considered putting an old shirt or pair of sweatpants in the covered cage next to the vet or the tire shop/somewhere it won't get trampled/messed with? Maybe the kitten would go back and sleep in it if you've got an old bit of carpet or something on the cage and it's 'womblike' and has your scent???
