To this day, I don't understand his motives for saying something cruel and unflattering even if he thought it was true. I also don't see how he could have thought it was true and still wanted to stay married to me. Now, if his goal was to alienate my friend from me--but I don't really believe he had that motive. It's an explanation that makes logical sense, in retrospect, but it would mean I terribly mis-judged his character.
I might well have pre-emptively explained things to my friend, if I had realized he had a question, but I didn't. My first clue was overhearing the second half of the conversation and at that point, I was too upset with my husband to be coherent and calm and talk to the friend, and then I didn't see him for months. Hmm...sounds like I could have used this faerie's presence back then, huh?
But that's all ancient history, and thank goodness for that!
