The chronic illness thing always, always, affects a person's energy and focus and ability to freely enjoy stuff. Sometimes, the effect is negligible, and sometimes it's debilitating, but (for me, at least) a major way I compensate is to focus on all the other things, because the chronic illnesses steal too much even at their best. I do the stuff I need to (avoid allergens, take medicine, use the CPAP, etc.) and then put my attention elsewhere. But the very focus away from the illnesses that I use to get the most out of the rest of life seems to help obscure it when the illnesses are getting worse, so that when I suddenly realize that things are worse than normal they are a lot worse, and have been for a while. Usually a while when I've been berating myself for not getting things done. *sigh*
