Reality shows do give you a chance to see some of the techniques, inspirations, and motivation that go into maing a thing. I don't watch much tv but I also love shows that show renovations and repurposing things or How It's Made.

You learn so much by watching the process someone used to create things. A big thing is realizing that some portions don't spring from your forehead like Athena--they require work. Other bits do, and you have no idea how you made such a weird leap of intuition. (I tend to get more frequent leaps of intuition when I've been working on my art--so even that isn't just a lucky moment of inspiration. It's a result of my brain working in the background all the time on something its engaged with.)

A friend of mine, Star Weems (She made my album art for Acolytes of the Machine.) often blogs about the process of making poured water color prints and other techniques. I'm not a visual artist, but I really enjoy the way she lays out the process (with pictures) in her essays.

One of my favorite posts of hers is about pricing your art. She has a great blog post that breaks it down into cost of products, paying yourself as an artisan, charging more to make up for the fee an art show would take, and actually making a little money from the picture. http://starrweems.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-price-your-art.html
