On political speeches and Christian virtues

[livejournal.com profile] alymid posted a U-tube video responding to Governor Palin's speech, especially to her use of "community organizer" as a slur. Listening to that prompted me to write this:

Well, you know, it's just that community
organizers often offer their work for free,
or at least without getting a salary,
So I think the Republicans are trying to say
that nobody smart would work without pay
thus, volunteering isn't work--it's just play
and it shouldn't count on voting day.

But on further reflection
that's an uncharitable position
which seems an odd way to ask a Christian
to vote your way
on the day
of the national election.

Jesus was a community organizer.

Pontius Pilate was a governor.

I think using "community organizer" as a slur reveals that Sarah Palin and her Party think the work community organizers do is not just worthless but shameful: "those people" whom the community organizers help are disadvantaged because they deserve it, and trying to help them is flouting their God's will.
