Evil Spammers Begone! ... (Evil Housesdust too)

To my friends here:

In general, I love it if people visit my old posts and leave comments--real ones, anyway.

If anyone sees a post they love and finds comments disabled, it's because the spammers decided it was a good place to leave lots of comments for me to delete. I have better things to do with my time--so if you want to comment on one of those entries, send a message or comment here or something, ok?

Thanks!

To the evil spammers: I'm not going to unscreen your mis-spelled advertisements and phishing attempts, so stop wasting my time (and yours)!

Now, back to house cleaning...

Deleting spam comments is NOT a satisfactory break from OMG-it's-almost-winter-heating-season cleaning.

I have the same problem, and I don't understand: Do they really think posting an ad about counterfeit merchandise on a post that nobody's much looking at is good for their business? All they do is piss me off.

It's "SEO" stuff. The more comments and links that refer to their site, the higher that site's rank in Google and other search engines.

Thanks, Siege. I get it now. And I shall foil their evil plot and curse them to sink to the depths of SEO hell with greater purpose than ever.

Ah, so deleting them (which I do) does make a difference.

But that does explain why they pick old posts instead of new ones. They hope I'm not watching.

They picked one of my old zen koan posts, and periodically spam it. I have no idea why. So far it is just the one. I thought about removing it, but then, I thought, will they just pick another? Oh well. So far, it is not a HUGE problem for me, although I can see it possibly becoming one.

I don't remove the post, I just disable comments. I don't get many comments on old posts anyway, so my friends are not very likely to be inconvenienced.

Yes, they do go find another one, so I don't disable the comments to that location unless I get more than one or two--but six in as many minutes, and that's that!
