Several times a week lately I come home, look at my e-mails, and delete spam comments from my LJ. I have better things to do with my time, really!

Is this just bad luck, or is it a sign that as a writer I'm starting to attract more readers?

I think it's mainly a sign that we need to have more public impalings of spammers. I've been getting spam comments on my own LJ -- only a few, but I never used to see any.

A bit of both I guess. Are they annonymous spam? I enabled Captcha for annonymous comments so I don't get anymore. I think there's a way to report them as spam before deleting. If they are comments from journals you can report them definitely.

Oh, well, I suppose it's totally unreasonable to try to put a silver linig into anything hacker-related.

Do you really think severe bodily punishment of one hacker (or even a dozen) would serve as a deterrent to others? Sadly, I don't. I suspect the thrill of beating the system is an essential motive for those people, and they'd just say the ones who got punished deserved it for letting themselves be caught.

No, all of them have been "LJ users". Allegedly, anyway.

And I certainly do report them as spam.
