It feels good to be back writing this story! I've missed Orchid, especially. To the people who've been following her story, welcome back!

To my new friends, Welcome to the world of the fireborn, where, according to the myth, people were divided into different forms so that there would be no more fear and hatred and prejudice.

(If this is your first visit,
the myth is better recounted here, and this story starts with Wings on His Fingers.)

ORCHID

The rocks felt very heavy. Orchid would have laughed at their weight a week ago. Of course, she reflected, yesterday she’d barely been able to fly with a net full of food.

DRAGON

Dragon swam on top of the water as he approached the huge old oak tree they’d chosen for their rendezvous, so she would know it was him. Orchid was finishing the last of the huge bag of food he’d cooked for their lunch as he pulled out of the water under the tree.

He really had thought he was going overboard when he gathered more seaweed while he swam, just in case.

Orchid greeted him with a smile and a huge yawn, the empty net bag dangling from one foot. Read more... )

I guess this is my catch-up weekend. :-D

It's been too long since we all visited the world of the windborn, the lakeborn, and the magically-talented fireborn.

For my new friends (and anyone who's lost track) the story starts here and the chapters are listed here. But now, back to the story:

Black Berries and Butterfish

ORCHID

Orchid dreamed she was traveling with her mother, sleeping on a beach and waking in the silent twilight before dawn to eat berries from a bowlful they’d gathered the night before. Mist, who was very young, just a teenager, was crying for a little boy in a distant town, who’d been killed because he was fireborn, and the grownups around him feared him, and attacked him. Even little children fight back when cornered, though the effort is doomed.

The weeping embarrassed Orchid; it seemed too private to intrude on, so she pretended she didn’t hear the sobs and very quietly ate the berries to calm her stomach. As she ate, she noticed the bowl was a shell of some sort. It looked very bright on the dark sand, and slightly blue, the berries inside like black stones. Somehow she knew black stones were safe, at least this week.

That didn’t make sense, but... )

The next chapter is one of Dragon's:  Homecoming, with Tea

ORCHID

The food Dragon had cooked for her stayed down, but while Orchid was hiding in the trees, she started shivering again. Her sense of up and down seemed unreliable, so she curled into as small a ball as she could, dug her toe-claws into a branch, and wrapped her wings around herself. She would have to hope Skimmer would leave without searching the island.

Curled up like that, she could barely hear Dragon and Skimmer talking on the beach, and she fell asleep, to endless nightmares of Skimmer tying her up, Skimmer beating her, and Skimmer attacking Dragon. In her dreams, when she managed to fly away, Skimmer shifted forms, and flew after her. How could Skimmer be a shifter?

But then, how could she herself be a fireborn?

The nightmares changed... )

DRAGON

When he had finally found her—or, more accurately, when she found him, Orchid had looked so sick and miserable, he could barely credit that she could still fly. Windborns were always slender; now she was past gaunt to skeletal, her boniness softened only by her fur.

He’d wanted to get her to somewhere that he could feed her; take care of her if she collapsed. It was only after they were on the other island that he thought to worry—if she collapsed, and Skimmer showed up, could he protect her? He was trying to figure out a plan for that when she started seeing the clams—not their air holes, but the clams themselves, right through the sand.

It was spooky.

It was very spooky.

It seems like just yesterday I was posting fiction. Oh, yeah, I was. But if I don't post this today, it'll wait until after Capricon, which would be officially late. So, here's the next chapter of Fireborn.

Oh yeah--for my new friends and readers, Fireborn starts with
Wings on His Fingers.

ORCHID

Orchid had jammed her claws deeply into the tree, and her wings and legs ached. She was drifting in and out of coherence, and dreadfully thirsty. Her mother appeared, hovering just a few feet away, and Orchid loosened one hand and reached for her, but felt only leaves. Mist wavered in the air as Orchid moved, then vanished. “Mom!” Orchid called, but her voice was barely a croak. She reached out and ended up swinging from the tree

The swinging made her nauseous again, and the heaves cleared her head a little. If she could imagine Mist was there, she could dream she was nestled in her pillows at home, and let go of the tree. And fall, without the sense to spread her wings and fly. Carefully, she loosened her feet, and then her other hand, and started to climb down.

In honor of being awarded a Prolific Blogger Award, by someone who loves Fireborn, I'm posting a second chapter this week.

(For new readers, the story starts here.)

Thank you to everyone who's reading!

DRAGON

Dragon walked away from Lotus and the healer, remembering that Orchid had come back after taking the grass into town, asking after Skimmer. And he hadn’t seen Skimmer all day. Could Skimmer really be fireborn?

But if he was, Orchid would have hidden him somewhere and come to tell her Mom she’d solved the mystery. And she hadn’t.

And the longer he thought about it, the more Dragon remembered all the petty little tricks Skimmer played on the younger kids when he thought no one was looking. He liked Orchid’s spunk, but she was so tiny—if Skimmer got her alone, there was no telling what he’d do. Especially if he took offense at her thinking he might be Fireborn. Read more... )

Welcome!  For anyone new to Fireborn, the first installment is Wings on His Fingers.

MIST

The rest of the day was pretty quiet, which did not help Mist's mood any. She had lots of time to look for Orchid, and worry about her. The older boys had been sent off fishing, and when Mist tried following the directions Lotus gave her, she couldn’t see them from the air. Which either meant that they were deep underwater or had taken a typical teenage option--heading in the direction they wanted to, rather than the one their elders had chosen.

She flew here and there, helping people with tasks, answering questions, trying to calm fears. No one knew where Orchid was, and by the end of the day, she didn’t even have to ask. The grownups all volunteered that they hadn’t seen her, offering sympathy or scolding her that she shouldn’t let such a baby fly free. Patiently, she told each person that Orchid wasn’t as young as they thought, and assured them that Orchid wouldn’t get lost anywhere within two days’ flight of Sunlit Aerie, much less within Sunlit’s territory. And then she thanked them for their sympathy.

For my new friends, Fireborn is a story set in a world where humans are adapted to fit different ecological niches. This is kind of in the middle of things; Fireborn starts here, with Wings On His Fingers.

MIST

The next morning, Orchid was still nowhere in sight, and Lotus gave her a sympathetic look and a shake of her head.

Immediately after breakfast, with more than a little fanfare, Eel picked search teams, supervised while they studied the drawings Mist had made, and sent them searching to various locations where the School had recently been.

He also made a production of assigning tasks and chores to everyone, and Mist noticed that the people who had seemed most scared or angry were given particularly engrossing tasks or sent hunting for the herbs. Although this might keep rumors down, Mist worried that it would also hamper her search. She tried to remember where he sent all the older children and teenagers.

“And what are you doing sitting around, Healer? Shouldn’t you be checking on Coral?”
